Positions

I want an Iowa that gives all Iowans a chance to reach their potential. To accomplish this requires smart government and bold, fearless leadership that positions PEOPLE as the top priority.

EDUCATION

Early childhood, K – 12 and college education, along with vocational opportunities, need to be available for all Iowans on an equal basis.

WAGES AND ECONOMY

We must raise incomes for all wage earners through smart government measures and increase the minimum wage. This is in addition to encouraging equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Woman should be able to control her own destiny regarding reproductive and healthcare decisions. I am opposed to any forms of punishment that hinders that right. When a woman chooses life, we should be there to help feed, clothe, house and educate that child.

ACCEPTANCE

The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality is just, fair and moves to uplift people. As with all Americans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens should have full equality under the law, without fear of discrimination in employment, housing, schools or other aspects of our society.

HEALTH CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH

All Iowans need to be assured affordable health coverage. This requires bold leadership that will fine-tune the ACA and state systems to best meet those needs, including closely monitoring the transition to privatization to ensure services are being met at a high level. We must also be prepared to act quickly if, at any time, these services appear to be compromised

URBAN, RURAL RENEWAL AND REVITALIZATION

Iowa has remarkable communities both urban and rural. We must cultivate and nurture these great treasures to position our state for the future.

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

As responsible stewards of our natural resources and surroundings, we must support ethanol, wind, solar, bio and other forms of renewable energy, while doing our part to reduce our environmental footprint.

INFRASTRUCTURE

We must have the foresight to manage and take care of the critical infrastructure needs of our state – roads, bridges, waterways and rail – as well as collaborate with City and County leaders, providing them with the resources and flexibility needed to address challenges in a timely fashion.

GUN VIOLENCE

Smart policies are needed relative to responsible gun ownership and our responsibility to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. We MUST reduce deaths and injuries caused by guns.

HOUSING AND HOMELESS

Affordable, safe and quality housing is critical. Special care should be taken for the homeless and most vulnerable.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

A deep review of our criminal justice system must take place with an aim at balancing justice for all regardless of race, age, sex and socio-economic position.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS AND ADDICTION

Drug use and drug-related deaths are on the rise in every demographic of our state and country. Iowa should be a leader in substance-disorder care and treatment.

SMALL BUSINESS

Small business drives our communities, state and nation. We must provide measured mechanisms that protect and drive the small business engine.

ELDER CARE

With two elder parents and an aging population, it is imperative that strategies be in place to provide the care deserved by the people who built this state during the last century.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Collaboration with city and county leaders and elected officials on joint local/state issues is imperative.

ROTATION OF OFFICE

Elected officials should serve no more than eight years in the Iowa House. A service cap should also be extended to the Governor, as well as House and Senate members.

ACCESSIBILITY

It is imperative that elected officials regularly meet with neighborhood organizations, community leaders and hold forums for constituents to share their voice as well as respond to constituent calls, emails and letters in a respectful and timely manner.
